FAQs

Why Take the FE Exam?

To pursue a professional engineering license (PE), you must first pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Examination. Check the State Licensing Board where you will take the exam for specific eligibility requirements.

When should I take the FE exam?

The moment that you are eligible, you should take it. The FE exam is offered year-round at approved testing centers. It definitely gets more difficult as the knowledge slowly seeps away.

How do I register for the FE exam?

To register for the FE exam, you will need to create an account on the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) website. From there, you can select the exam you want to take and the location where you want to take it.

When is the FE Exam administered?

The FE exam is administered nationwide each year in four testing windows during the following months: January–February, April–May, July–August, and October–November.

What is the success rate of the courses on this site?

Through our customer surveys, we have found that students who sign up for our course 2 months prior to the exam pass with a 96% success rate. For more information please have a look at the individual course page.

What is the timing of the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam?

Examinees have 6 hours to complete the exam, which contains 110 multiple-choice questions. The 6-hour time also includes a tutorial, a break, and a brief survey at the conclusion. The actual exam time is 5 hours 20 minutes.

Can you take the fundamentals of engineering exam without a degree?

Yes, but only under certain circumstances. You must have four years of documented professional experience in the applicable engineering subject, according to state rules and regulations. All states currently permit engineering graduates to take the first part of the exam, at the time of graduation or a few months prior to graduation. Only a few states allow non-degreed engineers with four years or more of engineering experience to take the fundamentals of the engineering exam. Because each state has its own set of laws and requirements for getting a license through long-term practice, eminence, or without examination. In each state, unapproved engineering study, four-year engineering technology programs, a four-year study in a field related to engineering, graduate study in engineering, engineering teaching, and engineering experience are all weighted differently. Therefore, you should research the rules of each state for particular criteria.

How much does the FE exam cost?

The cost of the FE exam varies depending on where you live and the testing center you choose. In the United States, the exam fee is typically around $700.

What topics are covered on the FE exam?

The FE exam covers a wide range of engineering topics, including:

  • Mathematics
  • Computation
  • Probability and Statistics
  • Ethics and Professional Practice
  • Engineering Economics
  • Engineering Mechanics
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Materials Science
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Industrial and Systems Engineering
  • Civil Engineering
  • Environmental Engineering
  • Biological and Agricultural Engineering
